Who Can Sponsor Family Members & What That Means

Sponsorship is a key part of family immigration, namely for visa applications. But who can be a sponsor, and what is required? First, sponsors must be US citizens or lawful permanent residents. Whether you are eligible to sponsor a family member for a visa depends on your status. US citizens can sponsor their spouse, parents, children (regardless of age or marital status), and siblings. Lawful permanent residents can only sponsor their spouses and unmarried children.

Second, as a sponsor, you will file immigration paperwork on behalf of your family member(s). Doing so involves completing various forms, providing evidence of your familial relationship, demonstrating that you are financially stable enough to support your family member(s), and more.

Being able to sponsor a family member for a visa is exciting. However, as described above, it comes with numerous responsibilities and hurdles. This is why many people choose to work with an immigration attorney who can provide advice, direction, and advocacy during and after the petitioning process.
